With Easter just around the corner, you can easily get into the spirit of Easter by creating your own beautiful chocolate Easter eggs at home! Read on to find out how.

Did You Know?

Although sweet treats might be the first thing that comes to mind when we think of Easter, it isn’t all about chocolate. Easter is incredibly important and meaningful in a lot of cultures around the world. Take Easter eggs, for example. We paint them, we decorate them and we eat chocolate Easter eggs every year, but do you know why? Eggs symbolize new life and rebirth, which is why they play such an important role during Easter.

How to Make an Easter egg

Making an Easter egg at home can be as easy or as tricky as you want it to be. If you really want to make an Easter egg entirely from scratch, you’ll need a plastic Easter egg mould and good quality chocolates to melt and form into the shell. But if want to save some time, you can purchase a ready-made chocolate egg from a store, and use that as a base for decorating. Whichever option you choose, the fun is really in the decoration!

Chocolate Easter Egg Recipe
Ingredients

Chocolate Egg Shell

  • 200g milk, dark or white chocolate OR 1 big chocolate egg
  • 1 extra square of chocolate

Filling

  • Small chocolates and sweets such as chocolate buttons, mini chocolate bars, mini marshmallows, jelly beans, toffees, M&Ms/Smarties
  • For a healthier twist: dried fruit and nuts

Method

Making Your Chocolate Egg Shell1. Chop the chocolates finely using a sharp knife. Leave the extra square of chocolate for later.

2. Place chocolates in a microwave-safe bowl and heat it in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time, stirring every 30 seconds until it’s totally melted. Leave the chocolate to cool slightly for 5 minutes.3. Spoon ¼ of the melted chocolate into each egg mould and use a pastry brush to spread it evenly in a thin layer. Refrigerate for 5 minutes until the chocolate sets.4. Remove the mould from the fridge and evenly divide the remaining melted chocolate between the 2 egg halves. If your chocolate has set slightly in the bowl, place it in the microwave and reheat for 30 seconds.

5. Refrigerate the mould for 1 hour until the chocolate layers are fully set.

6. Once the chocolate shells are totally set, tip the mould upside down on a cool surface and gently massage the mould until the chocolate egg halves slide out, taking care not to crack them.

Filling and Sealing Your Chocolate Egg

Now it’s time to fill the chocolate egg with your favourite sweets.1. If your chocolate egg is whole, gently slide a knife along the seal to separate it into two halves then fill one half with a selection of your favourite sweets. Be careful not to fill it to the brim in case it becomes too heavy and the egg breaks.

2. Chop the extra square of chocolate finely, place in a small microwave-safe bowl and heat it in the microwave for 10 seconds at a time until fully melted.3. Once it’s melted, use a pastry brush to spread the chocolate on the rim of each half of the egg. Bring the two halves together (with the sweets inside), until the chocolate sets and hardens, forming a full egg.4. Fill any gaps you might find along the sealed portion of the chocolate egg, using melted chocolate. Refrigerate for 20 minutes to set.

To make your Chocolate Easter eggs insta-worthy and most importantly a delicious and beautiful DIY gift, try decorating it with these elements:

Chocolate buttons

Heat a small amount of chocolate and use it as edible glue to stick chocolate buttons all over your Easter egg. You can also add a few M&Ms or Smarties for some bursts of colour.

Melted chocolate design

If you’ve got a spare squeezable bottle, fill it with melted chocolate and use it to draw shapes or write words on your egg. For your design to really stand out, use food colouring or different coloured chocolates. For example, if your egg is made from milk chocolate, draw designs in dark or white chocolate.

Sprinkles or edible glitter

For a really colourful Easter egg, cover it up in another thin layer of melted chocolate then dip it in multi-coloured sprinkles or edible glitter.

Coloured tin foil

To give your egg a metallic finish, wrap it up in different coloured foil! Or for a personal touch, simply take ordinary tin foil from your kitchen and create your own design. And there you have it! Your very own Chocolate Egg treat!

So if you were wondering what to do with the kids during the long Easter weekend, your plans are now sorted! Instead of buying standard chocolate eggs from the store, work together to make your own eggs, filled with your favourite sweet treats and decorated in a truly unique way.
