Floral Train - For The Love Of Flowers
Have you ever wondered when is the right time to gift someone flowers, or if roses are the only flowers you should be buying for Valentine’s Day?
Floral Train is a home-grown florist in Singapore that has been around since 2006, and seen floral trends come and go in the past decade. Located at Eastpoint Mall, the brand was founded by two friends who stumbled upon their passion for floral arrangement while helping a mutual friend with his floral arrangements and projects. That experience sparked a desire to help others share their love and sincerity though flowers, and since then Floral Train has been dedicated to ensuring that their floral arrangements are able to capture the feelings and sentiments of their customers.
With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, we speak to Melody and Brandon, to get some tips and tricks to buying a bouquet for your special someone!
1. Valentine’s Day is coming up – are roses really the most popular flowers during this occasion and is this the busiest period for florists?
The traditional dozen of red roses is most popular during Valentine’s Day.
Red roses are practically synonymous with Valentine's Day. It is a global symbol for passion and romance, and until that changes, roses are and will continue to be the most popular flowers for Valentine’s Day.
I think we speak for all florists when we say that yes, Valentine’s Day is the busiest time of the year for us! We receive orders as early as December and start preparing them a week before.
2. What are some alternatives for those who are not fans of roses?
If you’re looking for a fresh, non-cliché romantic gesture for Valentine’s Day, Floral Train can put together a customised arrangement for you.
Roses are not the only flowers you can give to show someone your love. Tulips, lilies, daises and pink peonies are also readily available in Singapore, so you don’t have to worry if you prefer not to buy roses.
3. Are Singaporeans a romantic bunch? Do you have any interesting or heart-warming stories to share about any of your customers?
We'd like to believe this is true. Most of our customers are in the courting stage, where they are trying to win over the person they are dating, and flowers are a way for them to express their love and admiration. However, it is heartening to note it doesn’t stop there.
We’ve seen our loyal customers through their courtship period to their wedding day, and other special occasions such as anniversaries and birthdays. Some even bring their wives to our outlet and tell us how they won her heart with our flowers.
4. Can you tell us a bit more about the bloom cycles of popular flowers?
We receive requests for seasonal flowers every now and then. As these flowers are not available all year round, we will let our customers know when they are in-season and how to best care for them in our climate.
For example, peonies or hydrangeas come into bloom between April and August.
5. Can you share some tips on how to keep roses (and other flowers) alive for a longer period?
If you receive a bouquet of flowers, keep them in a cool environment away from direct sunlight. You can keep the flowers fresh for longer by removing the wrapping that the bouquet comes in and trimming the stem by about 5mm to ensure the flowers can absorb the water properly before placing them into a vase.
You should also clean and wash the stems and change the water in the vase daily.
6. What are some alternatives to fresh flowers?
Vibrant and colourful preserved bouquets are also great for celebrating special occasions such as anniversaries.
Fresh flowers are classic gift ideas, but preserved flowers have been gaining in popularity the last few years. Our preserved flower collection is specially treated to last for years. These types of flowers make for practical gifts and don’t require green fingers!
Our chat with the founders of Floral Train taught us that flowers really do make for an ideal gift for any occasion – from Valentine’s Day to birthdays, weddings, graduation, or even as a house gift.
Buying flowers for a guy friend may also seem a little unconventional but it happens more than we think. We’ve found that when choosing flowers for guys, pick out more gender-neutral flowers such as sunflowers, and avoid pastel colours or arrangements that are too elaborate so as to not embarrass them. To make the gift more ‘masculine’, you can also send over a bottle of wine to go along with it.
If you are unsure of the type of flowers to buy, or the kind of arrangement you want, consult the florists at Floral Train and they will be able to recommend one based on the occasion and your preference!
